SHOP TILL YOU DROP FOR FAIRTRADE PRESENTS
Clothes, jewellery, handicrafts, chocolates and a host of other perfect Christmas presents are about to be unveiled in Wokingham… and they are all fairly traded, making this Christmas a happy and hopeful one for those who produce the presents, as well as those who buy them.
Wokingham Baptist Church is holding a Fairtrade shopping day on November 26, with a host of stalls from specialist Fairtrade companies such as PeopleTree, Traidcraft and Shared Earth, a visit from Father Christmas, and carols in the evening. The fun starts at 10.30am and goes on right through until 9pm, to allow as many people as possible in the local community to be able to visit.
Visitors can browse a wide array of gifts, all fit for the three kings to carry, and can be sure that the people in the developing world who produced the goodies will receive a fair price for their work. For shoppers who’d like to know more about how Fairtrade works and who benefits, there will also be an information stand from the Wokingham Fair Trade Campaign (WFTC).
Karl Relton, community development worker at the church, said: “It can be really hard nowadays to find something individual to give as a present. A lot of the shops seem to sell the same things. But the fair trade specialists we have gathered for our shopping day all have some quite individual things to sell. And as Christmas is the season of goodwill to all men, I’m sure most people would agree that we should pay the producers fairly for our presents before we enjoy unwrapping them all on the day!”
Father Christmas will be flying in for a visit to the church between 3.30pm and 4.30pm, and Christmas carols will be sung between 7.30pm and 8.30pm.
