FINDING OUT ABOUT FAIRTRADE WITH THERESA MAY
We all know Fairtrade is an important issue for consumers… but is it easy enough for us to find the right products in the supermarkets and make the right choices?
Sonning resident and MP for Maidenhead Theresa May is hot on the case. She attended an information stand from the Wokingham Fair Trade Campaign (WFTC) at the Twyford branch of Waitrose this Saturday, to learn more about fairly traded goods and to pick up a copy of the Wokingham Borough Fairtrade Directory, which lists all the shops in the borough which stock fairly traded goods.
Waitrose Customer Service manager Peter Gough kindly invited the WFTC to hold an awareness stand in their Twyford store with members of the committee on hand to answer any questions shoppers had about Fairtrade and how to make sure the products they buy have been purchased fairly from producers.
The WFTC is dedicated to raising the profile of Fairtrade and helping local businesses promote the Fairtrade goods they have on offer. The group publishes the Wokingham Borough Fair Trade Directory, showing shops and restaurants in the area which offer fair trade items, and has created a local network for fair trade supporters to share learning resources and news. Awareness stalls in shops are proving popular with many people requesting copies of the directory to help them with their shopping.
Theresa May, MP and Shadow Leader of the House of Commons said: “I believe that paying producers fairly for the goods we buy is very important, and looking for the Fairtrade mark on produce from the developing world is a good way to be sure we are doing that. I am very pleased to see so much active promotion of Fairtrade in our area. The WFTC’s directory is invaluable for helping everyone to find the products easily.”
WFTC chairman Colin Weedon said: “It is very important for our Campaign, that members of the public understand that Fairtrade is taken as a serious issue at the highest possible levels – and we are absolutely delighted that Theresa feels strongly enough about it to take time out of a very busy schedule to be with us here today “ -MORE- Customer Service manager Peter Gough said: “At Waitrose we are committed to making it as easy as possible for customers to find Fairtrade products and I am pleased to be able to work with the WFTC in this way. I hope many of our customers will find it useful and interesting to see the display of the wide range of Fairtrade products we stock and to have access to all the information they need when they are choosing Fairtrade items.”
